EIT Water prepares to call for projects in 2027

EIT Water is set to become a major driver of water innovation across Europe, with operations beginning in 2026 and the first project and training calls launching in 2027. Backed by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), the initiative brings together 50 organisations from 24 countries to address critical challenges including water scarcity, flooding, ecosystem degradation, and the transition to a sustainable blue economy.

The programme aims to go beyond research by supporting the full innovation cycle - developing entrepreneurial skills, funding projects, and scaling start-ups—while tackling the fragmentation that currently limits progress across Europe’s water sector. With rising costs, ageing infrastructure, and increasing climate pressure, the need for coordinated, cost-effective solutions is becoming urgent.

EIT Water is positioning itself as a pan-European platform to accelerate innovation, improve efficiency, and unlock new opportunities in water management. However, with broader uncertainty around future EU funding frameworks, the coming years will be key to demonstrating its long-term value.
